Measuring true temperature in lead-free assembly

One of our high
density electronic assembly manufacturing customers
experienced a problem with an IC package cracking.
Initially he thought that this was due to the reflow
temperature being too high, causing steam pressure
within the IC package to build up and cause the crack.
He monitored the temperature using our 25 micron fine
Thermocouple. The following profile was achieved,
demonstrating the advantages of our fast response
Thermocouple compared to a conventional Thermocouples.
Each
stage in the reflow process can be seen clearly with the
Yellow, Blue and Purple profile lines of the fine
Thermocouples. |

The temperature of the fine
Thermocouple is 50°C higher than the
conventional 0.5 mm spherical Thermocouple. |
We asked the customer if he was measuring the air
temperature. He said that he had connected the fine
Thermocouple directly onto the IC lead, using a high
melting point solder. By using the fine Thermocouple
and re-setting the temperature profile, his quality
improved and his defect rate was minimised.

Temperature of "Rocket Jet Nozzle"
with an increase of 1000°C in a few seconds
Our Sheet Thermocouples are used widely for the
measurement of rocket jet nozzles.
The temperature of a nozzle surface can increase in a
very short time, requiring a fast response from the
Thermocouple, also the rocket nozzle can experience
very severe vibration.
We have developed a special type of Sheet Thermocouple
specifically for rocket nozzle temperature
measurement.
It is available with our patented, single sided black
body Thermocouple.
We recommend that the black side of the Thermocouple
body is against the jet nozzle to be measured. With
our new patented design, we are able to measure not
only the heat conductivity through the surface, but
also the infra-red energy. Resulting in an accurate
reading in a very fast response time.

"Leaf"temperature

Researchers have been using our
sheet Thermocouples to measure the surface
temperature of crop leaves. A plant effectively
breathes through microscopic holes in its leaves
known as vesicles.
When the plant is heated by the sun, the vesicles
open, increasing vaporization and therefore,
lowering the leaf temperature, similar to how we
perspire.
It is possible to measure the temperature of leaf
surface correctly using a Sheet Thermocouple. With
the data collected, the researchers have been able
to predict not only climate, but also crop yield
correctly.

Our special fine Thermocouples
(13 micron) are used for biotechnology.
It is possible to change the water (culture solution)
temperature instantly, for example from 25°C to 35°C and from 35°C back to
25°C in 0.5 sec.
A single bio cell wouldn't die in spite of the
high temperature because of the very short time.
Therefore, we can obtain valuable data from a living
single cell character at high temperature.
